been released by the Soviet Union after Germany invaded. On the night of 13-14
March 1943, she was torpedoed twice by the Italian submarine Leonardo da Vinci

1919.
As a member of 220 Squadron RAF, he had left the Clyde in Convoy DMI in November
1941, bound for the Middle East. Because of the situation in the Far East, the
convoy was diverted and half went to Singapore, while the remainder, including
220 Squadron, landed in Java. LAC ALDERSON was taken prisoner when the combined
British/Dutch force surrendered to the Japanese in March 1942. Along with his
fellow RAF personnel he was sent to Ambon Island, off the coast of New Guinea,
as part of an airfield construction force. The work being completed in November
1943, some 1000 Allied prisoners of war were embarked on the Japanese ship Suez
Maru en route back to Java. In direct contravention of international law, the
Japanese failed to identify the Suez Maru as a prison-ship and it was sunk off
Bali on 29 November by an American submarine, the USS Bonefish, which identified
it as a legal target. Over 350 prisoners of war, including Joseph ALDERSON,
perished. LAC ALDERSON has no known grave, but his name is recorded on the
