Introduce youself! Let us know about your ALDERSON ancestors.

Bruce Whitehead: Chester Le Street to Canada

Greetings to all. I ran out of convenient (no cost) sources for my Whitehead (Acton Middlesex) and Sudlow (Cheshire) family research and though I should work on my wife's family. Her father's family is from Chester Le Street in Durham, and gf Claude Reginald A. an accountant, emigrated to Canada along with his brother Percy, a carpenter, about 1910. Percy had no issue. CR Sr had 2 sons. I live in Halton County, a rural district of Ontario Canada, and have found one other Alderson family here. This is the spectacular Niagara Escarpment which runs from Niagara Falls (Buffalo NY) to Georgian Bay, with wonderful hiking trails along the 150 mile route, much of it protected by private and government lands. I enjoy research on the internet and am always willing to track local leads in Canada.

Bruce Whitehead: War Combatants

Interesting thought about finding combatants in an old war. Were there newspapers held in archives that covered the events? Does the UK government have information about their soldiers and sailors that is accessible?

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is a wonderful modern resource. Perhaps it can be duplicated for earlier campaigns.

I am helping an author in Canada gather information about WWII airforce veterans by clipping all the Obits in the national paper, the Globe and Mail. These are turned over to a group in our Nation's capitol (Ottawa) who are building a data base.

My maternal GF (ex Chesire ca 1904) worked for the Curtiss Aeroplane Company in Toronto during WWI and the Curtiss Jenny was used as a training plane for the RAF, but probably did not see action in the war. This is what got me started on the aviation aspect of research.

Best wishes Bruce

Bruce Whitehead, with ancestors in Acton, London, Middlesex as well as Sudlow's in Nantwich and Hyde Cheshire and Halliday's from Manchester . so far.  Wife's father is Alderson from Chester-Le-Street Durham and mother 's McKinnon family from Isle of Mull.

Albert Alderson: British Small Wars

Hi Bruce,

You could look at www.britains-smallwars.com for recent conflicts.

I don't know of any government website but they most certainly will have records, probably in the National Archives or at the Imperial War Museum.

I have found an ALDERSON who was killed in the Fenian Wars in Canada, but again that was through scratching around on the net.

If I think of anything I will let you know.

Regards Albert

Bruce Whitehead: War Combatants

Fenians are an interesting group in Ontario Canada, Irish I believe, and tried to invade our country from New York State in the 1800's. As a folk singer in a trio in the 1960's, I knew of several good old songs on the topic. Might have been a good thing had they had won, since everyone in North America wants to be Irish at a certain time of the year. On the other hand …?

Bruce

Andrew Wade: Descendant of Joseph Alderson

Hi Everyone,

My name is Andy Wade and I run the Oakworth Village website at www.oakworthvillage.com

I have two interests in the name Alderson.
The first is John Thomas Alderson who is commemorated on our Oakworth War Memorial on the website above, and also Reeth War Memorial and the Menin Gate War Memorial to the missing at Ypres in Belgium.
Albert very kindly supplied me with information for our memorial page for John Thomas Alderson on our web site. Thanks again Albert. I have a picture of his name on the Menin Gate if you would like a copy.

Some of the Alderson family in Oakworth are buried in Dockroyd Graveyard which is under threat from a property developer and I'd be interested in finding anyone who may be directly related as we're looking to object to any development of the graveyard for housing. Nothing surprises me in this day and age.

I am also proud to say that I'm a descendant of a JOSEPH ALDERSON of Midgley, born c1775 (who was apparently a gardener), and ELIZABETH HANSON born 1775.
They had a daughter SARAH ALDERSON (believed born Midgley) 1798 died c1860. On 24/12/1816 she married CHARLES WADE of Haworth born c1794 died aged 73 on 13/07/1867 at Mount Tabor, Ovenden, Halifax. They had ten children:
Thomas; John; Charles; Ann; William; Betty; Grace; Joseph; James; Sarah.
We're searching for the grave of Charles and Sarah (assuming they are buried together) and would appreciate any information.

Oh, and if anyone would like grave pictures of the Dockroyd Alderson headstones, I'd be only too happy to oblige.

Regards,
Andy.

Albert Alderson: Descendant of Joseph Alderson

Hi Andy,

Hope you succeed in preserving the graveyard.

Just a query about your ancestor. We have his name as Joshua, not Joseph. He married Elizabeth HANSON in 1796. Are you sure his name was Joseph?

Andrew Wade: Descendant of Joseph Alderson

Hi Albert,

You are correct, his name was Joshua Alderson.
Well spotted.

Our information has Joshua Alderson and Elizabeth Alderson (Hanson) living at Slode near Wainstalls.

Charles Wade and their daughter Sarah Alderson's youngest son Joseph Wade was born at Slode in 1839.

Regards,
Andy.

Peter Wilkinson: Descended from Aldersons in Arkengarthdale

My GreatGreat Grandmother was Esther Alderson baptised aged 4 in 1821 in Arkengartdale Yorks. She married Jonathan Wilkinson 13 Aug 1840 in Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham. Esthers parents were Thomas & Margery Alderson. Margery would have been born in 1787 because she was 64 in the 1851 census (living with her daughter).

Has anyone any information about the Thomas & Margery Alderson?
Any help appreciated.

Peter Wilkinson

Angela: Seaham Aldersons

Hello, I am Angela.

I have been trying to trace my ancestors on my mothers side for a while now. My Grandfather was John James Alderson born in Easington 1886.

He married my Grandmother Charlotte Ann Simms in 1907. She died in 1915 and he married Jane Ann Carver (nee Richardson) in 1917. Jane had a surviving son from her previous marriage Thomas Richardson Carver. He was brought up with my mother and her sister. They then went on to have other children. They lived at Seaham.

John James Aldersons father was Frederick Alderson from Bradford. He was married to Elizabeth Nixon. I believe his parents were James and Sarah Alderson (nee Barraclough)

Would love to hear from anyone with connections or information.

Karen Watkinson: James Alderson Walker

Hello,

My name is Karen Watkinson and I am the gggrandaughter of James Alderson Walker, he was the son of Margaret Alderson and was born in Muker, Swaledale, Yorkshire. Margaret married Joseph Walker and was widowed quite young, she later married George Whitfield.

James Alderson Walker moved to Liverpool as a young man and married a local girl, they ran a pub in Scotland Road. My grandmother's three siblings all had Alderson as their middle name.

I am looking forward to getting to know you all and hopefully I can get lots of information for my family tree which I started researching last year and am completely hooked on.

Karen

Tessa: Jane Alderson of Stockton on Tees

Hi
I found this site by accident when I found that my GGG Grandmother was an Alderson. I hope I can find out more about her through this site even though the Alderson connection is rather tenuous! She was Jane Alderson born approx 1808 in Stockton on Tees and married to Nathaniel Devey, that is all I know of her.

Fingers Crossed!

Thanks

Bob Lawrence: My wife is an Alderson

Hi,

I  am working on my wife's family tree. Her maiden name is Alderson. Her great-grandfather was Walter Alderson (ca. 1865) who married Elizabeth Stanley (ca. 1875) from Stockton on Tees. Immigration records list Walter's mother as Catherine Alderson. Any help on this tree going back further would be greatly appreciated.

Albert Alderson: My wife is an Alderson

Hi Bob,

This family has been researched back as far as 1752 to Richard ALDERSON marrying Margery FIRBANK in Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire, England.

Walter’s parents were John and Catherine. John was well-known and respected for his charitable works in Stockton, County Durham, but was imprisoned for embezzling money from his employers.

The Alderson Family History Society has extensive details of the family available to members of the Society.

Melodie Tyrer: Hello from Perth!

Thanks for the inspiration and motivation to find Alderson connections and stories. Thoroughly enjoying the magazines sent with my membership. Thanks to Albert for responding to a query on a different website!

I am an Alderson by birth. My grandparents, Richard Alderson and Mary, and their two children Patricia (my mum), and John, arrived in Perth, WA in 1947, from Dudley.

Richard's parents are Edward Alderson who married Emma Parry, and they had other children (possibly older than Richard) Edward, and Olive. As I was told stories as a child, I hope to discover more details and, together with Malcolm (husband) who has ancestors from Lancashire, visit our ancestral roots in the future.
Regards to all, and have a wonderful week.

Melodie Tyrer

Albert Alderson: Hello from Perth!

Hi Melodie,

I am so pleased we have inspired you. We are looking forward to reading some of your stories here or in the AFHS Newsletter. Please share them with us. Very Happy

Did you know that there are books of early photos of Dudley available? If you look at, say, the Amazon website you will find a list of them.

I am still hunting details of your wider family. I will be very pleased to have any information you find about any ALDERSONs in Australia.

What became of John Edward Arthur ALDERSON, Patricia's brother?

Melodie Tyrer: Hello from Perth!

John Edward Arthur Alderson moved with his family from Perth to Albany in WA. He attended Albany High School, winning a scholarship to the University of Western Australia where he studied physics, graduating with Honours and completing his PhD in Physics. He is a very creative man who could have been a full-time artist (drawing, painting, sculpting in terracotta and wood, etc) but it took a back seat as research work provided more reliable employment. John later accepted a position in England (approx 1965) and subsequently moved to Ontario, Canada to work for the Canadian government as a researcher in nuclear physics. John met his wife, Gerda, in Canada, and they have two girls. He and his wife have now retired and live in Sooke, British Columbia, Canada where his artist talents are still producing interesting pieces.

The eldest daughter, Stephanie, has married (can't remember her married name-having a senior's moment) to a German man, in Germany, and they recently moved to the UK.

The second daughter, Bernice, is currently single and works as a graphic artist in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Regards, Melodie

Manda Bates: Treasure Hunt

Hi, My name is Manda Bates (nee Alderson). My father was Jeremy Neville George Alderson and my Grandfather was Neville George Alderson.

After a very frustrating 5 years, following my father's death, my step-mother has now allowed us to collect our Granmother's papers, and so my sister and I am deep in correspondence, and family records going back to the 1890's! I have learnt to always date letters, and always write names on the back of photographs!

Most of the information I have on our branch of the Aldersons is thanks to the late Peter Alderson, who was a cousin of my grandfather's and he had traced the family back to 1964, and sent copies of his research to my Grandmother.

My sister and I are working to get all the history of our side of the family onto a blog, so that we can share it with our cousins in Australia. Would I be able to put the blog name here? We are just starting at the moment, but enjoying every second. Thank goodness Granny kept so many things!

Albert Alderson: Treasure Hunt

Hi Manda,

We have records of your ancestors back to 1670. How far have you gone back?

We are happy for you to post as much as you want on this site. That gives us the opportunity all to share in the history of another ALDERSON family, and perhaps to add to it or learn from it.

Good luck with your research.

Manda Bates: Treasure Hunt

Hi Albert,

I have copies of Peter Alderson's research into my line of the Aldersons which goes back to George Alderson 1694 (not 1964 as I typed previously) to 1789. I have not researched the Alderson family history myself, as I knew Peter had achieved so much, and we were always expecting the records to be passed onto us, although I have begun to research the family history on my Grandmother's side of the family.

I expect that you know everything that Peter discovered, as he was very involved with the AFHS, but I will certainly post up what I have, when I have it in order.

Glad for this website

John Coates: Mary Alderson of Great Stainmore

Just joined the Web Site and sent the money off to join the Society last week. my name is John Coates and my Alderson connection comes from my Grandmother on my father's side of the family who was born Mary Alderson in Great Stainmore on 29.9.1881. Her father was William Alderson born 13.7.1846, died 18.8.1915, he was blinded and lost an arm in a Mining accident and spent the rest of his life working as a Grocer, somehow making deliveries by horse and cart. He was also a Primitive Methodist Lay Preacher, something that doesn't appear to have been passed down to his great-grandson!

Mostly through the work of my late Father's only surviving brother, I have traced my Alderson lineage back to William Alderson who married Jane Rukin on 20.5.1772 at Muker.

Would love to hear from any other members who have connections with my part of the Alderson family.

Regards to you all. JPC.

Albert Alderson: Mary Alderson of Great Stainmore

There is a long history of marriages between COATES and ALDERSON families. There is also a long ancestry of your family. The William ALDERSON & Jane RUKIN marriage was 1722 not 1772, but I suspect your date is just a mistype.

The information about William the miner/grocer is interesting. The baptism entries for his children show the change of occupation between the births of Mary,1881, and John, 1883. Now we know why. Do you have any details of the accident?

John Coates: Mary Alderson of Great Stainmore

You are right about the date, it was a mis-type. You are also right about the Alderson/Coates connection. I visited Muker for the first time in May and found a number of Coates' spotted around around the multitude of Alderson graves. My grandmother was Mary (born 1881) and she was sent down to Liverpool with several others in the family in her teens. In the 1901 Census she is living at 1, Hampson St, Anfield with the family of Robert Bousefield (a Dairyman) working as a Domestic Servant. It cannot be a coincidence that one of my Great Grandfathers neighbours at Windmore Green is also a Bousefield.

In Liverpool she met William Coates, from Barrowford in North Lancashire, they married and had 9 children, 6 (all boys), surviving into adulthood.

The story of my Great Granfather is very interesting, at the time of his accident he was fairly young and only had a couple of children. His obituary says that he was engaged in Mining activities at Mallerstang (I don't know where that is), there was an explosion and he lost a hand and one eye. Everything was done to save the other eye to no avail, so he became totally blind. If you E mail me with your address, I will send you a copy of both his obituary and that of his wife, Elizabeth Alderson. They both give a very detailed list of mourners, a few of which I can remember from being a small child.

Regards. John Coates.

Glenn  F Alderson: Edward Alderson who was Killed in Action

Hi to all,

Albert Alderson:
Edward Alderson who was Killed in Action

Hi Glenn,

The details I have of Edward are on our Roll of Honour and scroll down to Edward's record. The records are in alphabetical order. As you can see we don't know a great deal about him. I couldn't find out which action he died in.

Can you tell me what medals Edward was awarded so that I can add them to the Roll of Honour?

Alan Alderson: Halifax Aldersons

Hi

Just to say hello. My name is Alan Alderson from Brotherton in North Yorkshire. I originated from Halifax together with many of my ancestors. I wonder if before them they originated from the Swaledale area.

My father was Ewart (born) 1917, my grandfather Rawdon Born 1873, my great grandfather Benjamin born 1846 and great great grandfather was John Alderson born c1817.

They were married into Holroyds, Mclean's etc.

Albert Alderson: Halifax Aldersons

Heather Ibbotson: Hello from Canada

Hi: My name is Heather Ibbotson and I am an AFHS member from Brantford, Ontario, Canada.

My gr-gr grandmother, Margaret Alderson, was born in 1835 in Appleby, Westmoreland to Christopher Alderson and Mary Veach. Margaret married Robert Ibbotson and emigrated to Canada c. 1856.

I have been tracing all my family branches for about 25 years.

Susan: Betty Alderson in Warcop 1819

Hello,

I just found your website via Janet_66 on Ancestry. On her tree she has Elizabeth Alderson born 1792, Great Musgrave, died in infancy. This is the lady I had been thinking was an ancestor.

I have Joseph Bird married Betty Alderson 20 Sep 1819 Warcop, (from IGI) and later census records indicate she was born around 1791. She is variously described as Beth, Betty and Elizabeth.

If anyone knows who she is, I'd love to hear from you. I have quite a lot of details on her descendants, (assuming the rest of my research is a bit better).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Susan

Albert Alderson: Betty Alderson in Warcop 1819

Betty was the daughter of Isaac ALDERSON and Margaret WRIGHT. Our Society has information on her ancestors going back to a Lancelot ALDERSON in the early 1600s.

My father is Christopher John Alderson, son of John (known as Jack) Edward Alderson and Sheila Alderson (formally Sheila Delft). I hope you guys might be able to help me!

Hilary James: Roland Alderson

Hi my name is Hilary James, I am the daughter of Roland Alderson who was born in North Yorkshire around 1935.

I do not know my grandfathers name as he died before I was born. My father never really talked about his family but I am very keen to learn of my origins so if anyone can help please get in touch. My father had a brother called Eric and another called Fred, He also had 3 sisters called Joan,Ann and Ethel whom all still live in north Yorkshire.

Bruce Whitehead: Roland Alderson

"My father had a brother called Eric and another called Fred, He also had 3 sisters called Joan, Ann and Ethel whom all still live in north Yorkshire"

Hello from Canada. I found he easiest way to get started was to telephone or write living relatives and ask them for a bit of information on their relatives. I was assembling a bit of history for my son who had never met any of his relatives in the UK, and that seemed to open the door to the information. My Whitehead family grew up in Bow and then Acton starting about 1871, when they ran the Whitehead Sanitary Laundry chain for 100 years. I tracked down 14 branches of the GGF family and corresponded with most of them in the past 15 years. If I can be of any help ingiving ideas for organizing or researching information through oral history please contact me. I am stuck on my own research because I don't know what certificates I should buy, since they are so expensive in the UK. On the Alderson (wife's) side, I have wonderful printouts from the society which takes us back many generations. Now we hope to fill in details of daily life in those communities in the 1700's and 1800's, and hope for the day when we can travel again to visit the old villages in Yorkshire and Durham.

Good hunting, Bruce in Campbellville, Halton County, Ontario Province, of Canada.

Hi

Janice Seymour: Thomas Alderson and Mary Fawell

Hi Everybody

As you can see my name is Janice, my great great grandfather was Thomas Alderson, he was one of the sons of Ann Alderson, Thomas married Mary Fawell in 1830 in Long Newton, Durham. Thomas and Mary had five children, the youngest being Alice who was my great grandmother.

I would love to trace descendants of their other children, and also those of Alice's that I haven't already found.

Thomas had a farm in Sunderland, North Hall Farm at Bishopswearmouth.

The highlight of 2004 was finding Thomas and Mary's gravestone and knowing that my ancestors had stood on that very piece of land that I was now standing on. I can tell you there were a few tears!

Karen: Surrey Aldersons

Hi everyone, I'm Karen, been researching my Aldersons for best part of 15 years.

My branch of the family comes from Richmond, Surrey although at some stage in the past, I think maybe one of them left the North to emigrate down South. I now live in West Yorkshire, so I've done the move in reverse.

I would love to hear from anyone with any info on southern Aldersons (would love to hear from anyone actually!)

Norma:

Hello, I am Norma.

I have been retired for 1 year exactly, loving every minute, wish I had done it 40 years ago.

Since I was a child my mother, she is now 94 and still has a better memory than me, has talked of her family from the North East. Her tales created within me a need to know and understand my family's history. The content of these stories has remained constant and therefore gave me an excellent base from which to start my research. I had not gone back very far before discovering the Alderson Family. My earliest Alderson connection, to-date, is William Alderson a farmer from Bishopwearmouth. He was born circa 1780.

Sandy: Aldersons from Thornes

Hi, I am Sandy and I live in Cumbria. I have been a member of the society for the last 5 years or so. Finally got back to 1824 but going is now tough with my Alderson line. As my great, great, great grandfather was yet another Thomas you will all know what I mean. My branch came from Thornes and before that probably Angram and the men married into the Rukin family and the Fawcetts. Hopefully I may find someone researching a connecting branch - hope so anyway.

The Society is so valuable in being able to keep people together and for mutual support, especially the help given by Yvonne.
